Did you know that the brain does not know what is real and what is imagined?
Yep.
That is why personal development and life coaches urge us to dream, to imagine, to visualise so that we may manifest the health benefits in the here and now…even when our dreams have not yet been fully realised.
Why?
For instance, at this time of writing I am not yet on a gently bobbing boat thousands of miles away on the ocean, gazing into the bottomless depths of an Emerald marine sea. Nor have I yet carried out the tradition of releasing my problems and desires to an almost impossibly blue sky while my upturned face is sprayed by eager salty waves.
And when I am forced off the water for the day, I continue to satisfy my soul’s need to hear and be near the ocean by sitting in my Mother-in-Law’s beach front garden. The honeysuckle and crayfish laden air teases my nostrils while the book I am supposed to be reading lies neglected in my lap as I marvel at the beauty of the Universe. Beauty which seems perfectly staged just for me in that perfect moment in time.
But I am not there, sitting as I am in a busy cafe writing…but I can press pause anytime today and conjure up that perfect day.
I close my eyes and, bringing any one of those seascape pictures to mind, my breathing slows, an involuntary smile paints my lips and my heart soars and feels glad. The obligations of the day forgotten for a moment while I give myself over to the smell of sea waves…and serenity.
Sigh.
Another school year has come to an end.
It is timely and necessary that busy educators also press pause on term-time obligations and give themselves over to their own place of serenity in order to return to their teaching gift refreshed and re-energised.
Yes, lesson plans and exam results day will punctuate the summer holidays, but there will also be moments where you can choose to press pause, to retreat to your own perfect day…to feel your heart soar and be glad.
